Who Should I Call First?

• Teacher

When you have a question, the best place to start is with your child’s teacher(s). Depending on your child’s grade level, this may vary. In elementary school, students typically have one or two core teachers along with elective teachers such as physical education, art, and music. In middle and high school, students may have up to seven teachers, including both core and elective subjects.

• Case Manager

• Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Contact

• Therapist(s) (Speech/Language, Occupational or Physical)

• Student Services (Health Services, School Counselor, Social Worker, or Psychologist)

Every student receiving Exceptional Student Education (ESE) services is assigned a Case Manager—typically a special education teacher—who is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).

In addition, each school in Hillsborough County has an ESE Specialist, Lead, or Contact. This individual supports instructional planning, curriculum alignment, behavior strategies, compliance with ESE regulations, and overall program coordination. They collaborate closely with Case Managers, school administrators, ESE and general education teachers, and other staff to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed.

If your child is receiving related services—such as speech, occupational, or physical therapy—or is supported by the school nurse or school psychologist, you may also contact those individuals directly with questions specific to their areas of expertise.

• Assistant Principal

At the elementary level, schools typically have one Assistant Principal (AP) who supports instructional, administrative, and operational leadership. In middle and high schools, there are often multiple assistant principals with more specific roles—such as AP of Administration or AP of Curriculum. 

• Principal

The Principal oversees everything that happens at school. 

• ESE Administration

ESE Administration support the Regional Superintendent and ESE General Director by providing expertise on federal and state regulations, assisting with the implementation of ESE programs, and offering on-site support to schools and district staff. Each region is supported by a Coordinator and an ESE Parent Liaison to further assist families and schools.

• Regional Superintendent

The Regional Superintendent supports school leaders by providing coaching, training, and guidance.
